Drift boat king salmon fishing

Drift boat king salmon fishing on the Kasilof river today! The morning has been good with a few king salmon caught. Since the kasilof and Kenai river has gone to catch and release with artificial lurers only, the bite has been on par to what “I” think it should be. This fish took us through two holes to land it and the guest said it was the most epic battle he has ever had and has king salmon fished his whole life. He was happy to release it and said he wouldn’t have killed it even if he could. For a great day on The river and a chance to catch a really big king salmon the kasilof river is producing fish right now. 20120716-131521.jpg It is hard work fishing for king Salmon and can take some patients too but the reward is well worth it.  The fish will weigh in the high 30 pound range and is fresh in from the ocean.  The best time to catch a king salmon is when it first enters the river.  They are full of energy and will flat out punish you. We offer king salmon trips on the kenai and kasilof rivers and have both drift and power boat options. If you are interested in chasing a king salmon give us a call at 907-382-6808 or find us on the web at www.driftingonthefly.com

IZAAK WALTON BOAT LAUNCH

DRIVING DIRECTIONS TO IZAAK WALTON BOAT LAUNCH IN STERLING, ALASKA View IZAAK WALTON OR MOOSE RIVER BOAT LAUNCH in a larger map Most trips meet here for Rainbow trout, Silver Salmon and sometimes King salmon fishing trips. Izzak Walton boat launch in located at the moose river bridge in Sterling Alaska. The Izzak walton boat launch and state park has a very nice campground, picnic tables, and outhouses.  This is one of my favorite state park facilities located on the Kenai river.  The Moose river dumps into the Kenai only a short distance from the boat launch.  It is a slow and shallow river and makes it very nice for launching a boat.  There is also some great silver salmon fishing here as well when they are running.  It is a toss up between meeting here or at bings landing.  It usually depends on how busy the boat launch is at bings.  If we are headed up river it takes about 15 minutes to pass bings launch up and head on to skilak lake.  This is worth it if the wait to launch at bings is very long. Guided Kenai River Trip Rate $250 per person *LARGE GROUPS WELCOME *LODGING PACKAGES AVAILABLE *EXCLUSIVE BOAT PACKAGES -2 PERSON EXCLUSIVE STARTING AT $750.00 A DAY -3 PERSON EXCLUSIVE STARTING AT $950.00 A DAY Hope this helps out and we are looking for ward to fishing with you this year! KENAI RIVER KING SALMON FISHING

First run of Kenai River King Salmon Opportunities at for kenai river king salmon fishing starts in early to the middle of May.  Our drift boat makes is possible to navigate through the shallow Kenai River and get to concentrated first runs of king salmon.  By the first of June the Kenai river is usually high enough that we will start running our powerboat until the end of King Salmon season on the Kenai River.  The best thing about being here for the first run of king salmon is there is much less competition on the water.  The run isn’t as big as the July run of kings and is not as popular.  This is sometimes beneficial to the anglers because of fewer boats on the water.  The first run of king salmon peaks in numbers by the middle of June and strong daily numbers will appear until the second run start to show up. Second run of Kenai river king salmon The second run of king salmon is bigger on average than the first run of fish.  This is a very popular run of king salmon because they appear in the summer.  The Kenai Peninsula in the nicest month is indescribable.  There are two to three times more fish in the second run of king salmon on the Kenai River than the first run. The use of bait also opens July first (sometimes earlier).  The use of bait opens more techniques in which we can pursue these fish.  Wrapping quick fish for example tends to produce more fish than an unwrapped one most of the time.  We also back bounce, back troll, and side drift with cured eggs.  The second run has a lot of good characteristics but it also brings in a lot more pressure to the river.   When it comes to pursuing a trophy don’t rule out the first run because the standing world record was caught in May! Cost for guide trip: *$275.00 plus tax per person a day *packages available *Drift and Power boat trips available *Large groups welcome, we fish up to 4 people per trip per guide boat *Exclusive boat prices available! This is one of the 3 fish these two guys caught this day!  On the Kasilof river you do not have to quit fishing if you have harvested a fish.  Though we try not to take bites away from other fisherman you will have a line in the water if everyone hasn’t limited out for the day!  Odds are better drift boat fishing the Kasilof river. We have stepped it up to a 30″ leader with a large egg orange cheater behind a # 40 diver.  This set up is sure to produce a fish if presented right and time out is spent. tight lines, Scott www.driftingonthefly.com

Kenai River King Salmon Fishing Trip

kasilof-king-salmon-029 After a long week of fishing some friends and I got a chance to break in a buddies new Willie classic power boat on Sunday. I don’t usually get a chance to catch a King Salmon on the kenai river myself but this day I did. Sometimes it takes sitting in the front seats to know how nice a guided fishing trip can be!  I ended up boating this nice king salmon on the first pass of the morning.  kenai river king salmon fishing can take some patients but today I was rewarded quickly.  It can take a week, a day, or the very first pass to catch a fish like this and that is why they call it fishing. We were fishing a 28 inch leader with a orange Cheater. Hope fishing is going well for everyone and look sharing more King Salmon information in the upcoming week! contact us out a here if you are interested in a guided kenai river king salmon fishing trip. We offer many other fishing trips in Alaska and on the Kenai river if you would like more information we are willing to help you out all we can. tight lines scott sager

CLEANING KENAI RIVER KING SALMON

There are many ways of cleaning kenai river king salmon and this is just one of them.  A great way to remove scales from a big king salmon is to use a power washer. Some good friends of mine showed me this a few years ago and it will work on any fish that you wish to remove scales before filleting.  This will cut down on weight for shipping and keep your fillets “fishy” smell to a minimum. 100_1684 Use the power wash before you gut or do any cutting to the fish for the best results. Try it on your next salmon and see if it work for you too.  It is the sportsman’s responsibility to take care of anything that you harvest and I seem to learn more about different ways to take care of my harvest every year.  For filleting king salmon I prefer a stiffer blade for cutting down along the backbone but then I switch back to a more flimsy blade when it is time to remove the ribs from the fillet. We hope this help and if you have any questions or would like to book your next Kenai River King Salmon fishing trip give us a call. Tight Lines Scott Sager
