Hanging out on the Kenai river

Hanging out on the Kenai river today waiting for a push of sockeye salmon to come our way. 20120709-190226.jpg We are still a few days away from the big push of second run of reds (sockeye salmon). On average the reds usually hit the river in big numbers by the 15th of July so our hopes of filling the limit aren’t way up there but we know with a little work that we get close to a limit anyways. We ended up picking up a couple fish today but we had to work for every one of them! Pulling into the gravel bar we did encounter this bald eagle feeding on a fresh carcass.  As we got closer the eagle took off at the last second and flew away.  Every time I See an Eagle go into flight close like this it wows me.  How a bird this large can fly so easy? 20120709-190907.jpg 20120709-190914.jpg I’m sure that the sockeye will hit the river any day with the predictions of the run as high as they are.  I guess we will just have to wait and see what happens.  It is very hard to know what kind of runs of salmon we will have year in and out.  The only thing I can promise is that our gear will be in good working order and we will be in one of my most productive spots to keep our odds up for the whole trip.

Kenai river rainbow trout fishing

A float plane passing over while we were chasing kenai river rainbow trout yesterday.  Days on the Kenai river rainbow trout fishing seem to go by so fast but scenes like this one will last a lifetime in ones mind.  Kenai river Rainbow trout fishing was good In The morning and tapered off by the afternoon. Bright sunny days seem to do this to any species of fish everywhere.  Flesh flies and streamers seamed to be the best fly selections. Today dead drifting size 6 black wooly boogers seamed to be the ticket. 20120624-054404.jpg Kenai river rainbow trout fishing can be intimidating because of the size of the river.  When ever I approach a large body of water the first thing that comes to mind is to look at it like a smaller stream.  Breaking down the runs and paying attention to the depth of the river where you are getting bites in.  This might help in not getting overwhelmed by the sheer size of the system and when you find fish don’t leave fish. If you would like a guided trip for rainbow trout or salmon feel free to give us a call at 907-382-6808 anytime or contact us through the site!

Rainbow Trout Season

Today is the Rainbow Trout season opener on the Kenai River, June 11th. Get out your smolt and flesh fly patterns and enjoy some potentially great rainbow trout fishing. This is a great time of year to pursue trout, they are hungry and willing to take traditional flies, which is always a lot of fun. The mouth of the Kenai River from Skilak lake five miles down stream is closed to all motorized vessels until June 15th! This is set into place because of the trumpeter swans that are nesting in the area. If you are interested in taking a guided fishing trip on the Kenai river, feel free to contact us anytime at www.driftingonthefly.com or at 907-382-6808.

IZAAK WALTON BOAT LAUNCH

DRIVING DIRECTIONS TO IZAAK WALTON BOAT LAUNCH IN STERLING, ALASKA View IZAAK WALTON OR MOOSE RIVER BOAT LAUNCH in a larger map Most trips meet here for Rainbow trout, Silver Salmon and sometimes King salmon fishing trips. Izzak Walton boat launch in located at the moose river bridge in Sterling Alaska. The Izzak walton boat launch and state park has a very nice campground, picnic tables, and outhouses.  This is one of my favorite state park facilities located on the Kenai river.  The Moose river dumps into the Kenai only a short distance from the boat launch.  It is a slow and shallow river and makes it very nice for launching a boat.  There is also some great silver salmon fishing here as well when they are running.  It is a toss up between meeting here or at bings landing.  It usually depends on how busy the boat launch is at bings.  If we are headed up river it takes about 15 minutes to pass bings launch up and head on to skilak lake.  This is worth it if the wait to launch at bings is very long. Guided Kenai River Trip Rate $250 per person *LARGE GROUPS WELCOME *LODGING PACKAGES AVAILABLE *EXCLUSIVE BOAT PACKAGES -2 PERSON EXCLUSIVE STARTING AT $750.00 A DAY -3 PERSON EXCLUSIVE STARTING AT $950.00 A DAY Hope this helps out and we are looking for ward to fishing with you this year! View CENTENNIAL PARK BOAT LAUNCH in a larger map This is a very popular spot to launch your guide boat on the lower Kenai river for a days fishing for King salmon.  There is a fee station set up shortly after you enter the park so make sure you stop for that.  Along with camping and great gravel bars for fishing the park has picnic areas and of course the boat launch. The Kenai river runs fast in July and Centennial park has a nice back eddie with place to park your boat while you are parking your rig after launching.  If you plan on fishing the top half of the lower kenai river this is a great place to launch your boat.  I enjoy fishing sunkin island, poachers cove, river quest, big eddie and a few other runs that are easily accessible from Centennial park. business phone: 907-382-6808 or send an inquiry here! UPPER KENAI RIVER BOAT LAUNCH

DRIVING DIRECTIONS TO THE UPPER KENAI RIVER BOAT LAUNCH View UPPER KENAI RIVER BOAT LAUNCH in a larger map Visit AK State Parks for more about the upper Kenai river boat launch. Located at the Kenai Lake bridge in Cooper Landing the upper Kenai river boat launch is a great place to access the river.  Right at the boat launch is a great place to try an catch a rainbow trout or dolly varden if you do not have access to a boat.  Here we will launch the drift boat for a days float trip down the Kenai river to Sportsman’s or Jim’s landing.  The time of year varies when we meet at this location.  This section of the Kenai river is good fly fishing or spin fishing at times for Rainbow Trout and Dolly Varden.  The salmon fishing can be good for the second run of  sockeye salmon (Reds) and silver salmon as well.    This is a drift only setting so there are no power boats allowed from Kenai Lake down to Skilak lake.
