Alaska rainbow trout fishing

20120827-224002.jpg Float planes often cruise the Kenai River and can land in many places.  It is quit an experience to have a float plane buzz you while you are in Alaska rainbow trout fishing. The rainbow trout have moved behind the king salmon and there are fish feeding through out the whole system right now. 20120827-224325.jpg Alaska rainbow trout fishing can be very frustrating if you do not match the hatch.  The hatch being flesh and eggs from the salmon.  When the Rainbows key in on this rich food source you will be hard pressed catching them on any other imitations. The first to spawn are the King salmon.  King salmon eggs are around 9-12 mm in size and vary in color depending on light and time that they have been in the water.   20120827-224509.jpg Often in the fall you can find bears feeding along the gravel bars.  This bear was spotted below rainbow alley on the middle kenai river.  He chased sea gulls and found an easy meal right in front of us while we fished.  I love it when guest that have never seen an Alaska brown bear have the opportunity to hang out with them on the river. Relaxing on the Kenai river

Relaxing on the Kenai river with a nice cigar and a beer at mid day. Wayne and crew are Taking a few minutes from fishing to smell the roses and reflect on the morning rainbow trout fishing. 20120823-172021.jpg The guys enjoying a nice cigar on the Kenai river after a big lunch. 20120823-171927.jpg Alcohol is permitted on our boats but not in excess.  We do not provide any alcoholic beverages. 20120823-171917.jpg Sometimes it’s not all about the fish although these guys caught a lot of Kenai river rainbow trout and dolly Varden.  The Kenai rive is an excellent place to get away from it all and get back to spending the day doing something for you, and possibly hooking the ONE! June, August, September and October can be very productive months for rainbow trout fishing and just relaxing on the kenai river.  If a guide trip is in your future feel free to give us a call at 907-382-6808 or contact us through the site. Kasilof river silvers and kenai river trout fishing

20120823-133723.jpg   Kasilof river silvers and kenai river trout fishing combo Got a quick limit of silver salmon yesterday morning on the kasilof river bouncing eggs in the tidal water. The group was interested in some fly fishing so we put the drift boat up and took the power boat out on the Kenai river rainbow trout fishing. The little extra effort really paid off with some big fish!!  This isn’t something we do every day but if there is time we are happy to go the extra mile for you. 20120823-134336.jpg Bright sunny days often put the rainbow’s off the bite.  Today was an exception to that!  When salmon start dropping eggs into the system all bets are off and it should be fish On.   20120823-134406.jpg Trout salmon combo days can be a lot of fun and a lot of work as well.  If we change up gears and switch systems extra half day rates will apply for the afternoon trip. If you would like to get in on a day like this give us a call at 907-382-6808. Tight lines, Scott Sager Drifting On The Fly

Kenai river rainbow trout fishing

20120808-142451.jpg We were out early this morning for our kenai river rainbow trout fishing trip. Linda and Bill Live in Sterling Alaska and try to fish the Kenai river rainbow trout bite many times a year.  The bite is getting better everyday now, there are days we are landing 50+ fish and some very large fish too.  Here we are drifting the middle kenai river for rainbow trout and dolly Varden that have moved out behind the king salmon. There are some very elaborate private fishing platforms along the Kenai river but this one stands out the most to me! 20120808-142948.jpg I don’t know how many stairs there are to the top but I want to ride the tram that is along side them.  Going up wouldn’t be to bad but coming down all I would think about is doing a belly flop into the full Kenai River!  Whoever built this has to be a character and I would love to sit down and have a beer with them.  I bet you would hear some great stories.  We fish this drift often in August and early September so ask me to point out the stair case to you because i’m sure you will be into your drift more than you are looking for a set of stairs!

Kenai river sockeye salmon and rainbow trout fishing

Kenai river sockeye salmon and rainbow trout fishing trips with Drifting on the Fly’s guide service. Kenai river sockeye salmon and rainbow trout fishing combination trips can be a long day on the water but provide a great experience of the river. Our full day trips are advertised at 8 hours but many days go on a little longer. I met up with one of my Alaska resident fishing groups early to get our waders on and gear ready this morning. The kids eager to get out on the river but the early mornings make them move a little slower. 20120724-203028.jpg Starting out on the lower Kenai river with some sockeye salmon fishing.  The kids had a great time and caught a few salmon but really wanted to go after a big Kenai river rainbow trout. Early in the sockeye salmon run I target fish directly behind cleaning stations and were carcasses tend to pile up. This proved to be where most of the rainbow trout were today! Nothing big but that doesn’t matter when you are catching fish. Good job guys and I’m looking forward to next weekend. 20120724-203906.jpg 20120724-203924.jpg 20120724-203936.jpg Combination trips are great for an all around experience we usually break the trip into two half days, fishing for salmon in the morning and trout in the afternoon. Thanks for keeping up with us and remember to check us out at www.driftingonthefly.com and on Facebook

Kenai river fishing

kenai river fishing for rainbow trout  was slower today but we did manage to hook a few and land a few! I found that swinging leeches with a sinking tip line got the most bites. The Kenai river is big and the fish are spread out more now. I found fish in the eddies and in the normal spots but no big concentration were found. Big bunny leeches and smaller flesh fly patterns seemed to be the ticket on a dead drift.  Some days its a dead drift and some days it is on the swing.  I will put an indicator on with a trusted pattern and run a dead drift and swing it at the end of the drift.  If I see that most of my takes are on the swing I will take the indicator off and take more of a down and across approach.   20120705-214627.jpg 20120705-214634.jpg This unlucky sockeye salmon decided to take a leech on the swing.  After a long winter a fresh salmon on the BBQ is always looked forward too.  A 10 to 12 pound fish on a 7 weight fly rod put up a great battle.

Kenai river rainbow trout fishing

A float plane passing over while we were chasing kenai river rainbow trout yesterday.  Days on the Kenai river rainbow trout fishing seem to go by so fast but scenes like this one will last a lifetime in ones mind.  Kenai river Rainbow trout fishing was good In The morning and tapered off by the afternoon. Bright sunny days seem to do this to any species of fish everywhere.  Flesh flies and streamers seamed to be the best fly selections. Today dead drifting size 6 black wooly boogers seamed to be the ticket. 20120624-054404.jpg Kenai river rainbow trout fishing can be intimidating because of the size of the river.  When ever I approach a large body of water the first thing that comes to mind is to look at it like a smaller stream.  Breaking down the runs and paying attention to the depth of the river where you are getting bites in.  This might help in not getting overwhelmed by the sheer size of the system and when you find fish don’t leave fish. If you would like a guided trip for rainbow trout or salmon feel free to give us a call at 907-382-6808 anytime or contact us through the site!

Kenai river rainbow trout fishing

Enjoying a day on the Kenai river rainbow trout fishing. A couple friends enjoying the sun while cruising back up to the top of the run in their drift boat.  In the really deep runs fishing a float rod will allow you to be on the bottom at any depth, This method of fishing is also helpful in getting your drift away from the boat in clear water. 20120622-120406.jpg20120622-120617.jpg There are many different ways to pursue kenai river rainbow trout and we try to accommodate all anglers with their preferred way to fish.  I like to make sure that every angler has the opportunity to put a fly rod in their hands if they are willing though.  Kenai river rainbow trout fishing is unique in the way that the perfect cast is not necessary but the perfect drift is and we pride ourselves on good communication and teaching you how to make a drift to catch a fish. Choose a day on the drift boat or power boat to go on the Kenai river rainbow trout fishing and you will have a great day on the water.   Let us know which you would prefer and the technique that best suites you and we will get you lined up. Rainbow Trout Season

Today is the Rainbow Trout season opener on the Kenai River, June 11th. Get out your smolt and flesh fly patterns and enjoy some potentially great rainbow trout fishing. This is a great time of year to pursue trout, they are hungry and willing to take traditional flies, which is always a lot of fun. The mouth of the Kenai River from Skilak lake five miles down stream is closed to all motorized vessels until June 15th! This is set into place because of the trumpeter swans that are nesting in the area. If you are interested in taking a guided fishing trip on the Kenai river, feel free to contact us anytime at www.driftingonthefly.com or at 907-382-6808.
