WILLIE DRIFT BOAT

After a long haul we finally have the new willie drift boat stored here in Alaska . Things are starting to come together for the 2008 Alaska fishing season. This new drift boat will be used for many seasons on the Kenai Peninsula before we will be due for another one. Willie drift boats are durable and a very safe boat to fish out of. DOLLY VARDEN FISHING ON THE KENAI RIVER

Dolly Varden fishing on the Kenai River is often off the hook in the spring until the middle of september. This beautiful fish was caught in the fall right before the Dolly mVarden spawn. Dolly Varden are in the char family and spawn in the fall.

When you find spawning Sockeye Salmon you’ll be sure to find a Dolly Varden or two behind them. With clearer water look for the shadows under and behind the salmon. They can be hard to see sometimes but whenever you approach the stream or river make sure you spend a minute looking before walking right up to the water. This fish was caught in the middle of September on the Kenai river and is a very good fish. Large 25 inch or bigger Dolly Varden are caught daily on the kenai river when the bite is going off. KENAI RIVER KING SALMON FISHING

Kenai river king salmon fishing is worth the wait! Kenai river King Salmon can be tough to catch and harder to land but with time put in and a little luck it can come together too. This past year I had the opportunity to have my father in the boat in the first of June. It is early season and on the first pass we netted this big 51 inch king salmon out of a drift boat with no motor. Sometimes you can catch a fish right off the bat and other times it can take a day or two. That’s what keeps us fishing but by Keeping your gear in good shape and always remember to gear up with fresh line. You never know what will be tugging at the other end. FLY FISHING THE KENAI RIVER

Fly fishing the kenai river is a great way to spend time on your vacation. I recently was asked the question ‘What rod would you recommend for Rainbow trout fishing on the Kenai River’? I thought about it and my answer: there is a rod for every situation. On the Upper kenai River I like to use a 9′ – 10′ 6 or 7 weight and then a 7-8 weight on the Middle Kenai river for rainbow trout and dolly varden. I think it comes down to preference when choosing a rod. One thing that I do consider is the amount of weight of the fly you are casting and the size of fish that you could latch on to. No matter the weight of the rod I believe that a 10′ rod or longer even is your best length for big mends and long leaders!

Whenever you approach a stream or river make sure you look before you wade. Fish will often be feeding close to the bank and this is a fish you can catch instead of spooking into deeper water.

FALL STEEL HEAD FISHING

fall steel head fishing is in full swing right now. I don’t know if it is good or bad… The river level that is. On one hand I cannot get to my favorite “winter fishing” areas because I can’t wade across the river. On the other hand these levels make the river very easy to float the Kenai River. The Kenai River continues to flow at a July level. An ice dam breaking started the abundant flow of water and recent rain/ snow has kept the levels up. As I write this it is 23 degrees but yesterday the high was 45 degrees – balmy! The snow from last week has almost all melted in the flats though, the mountains are fully covered. The middle river (Kenai) is still fishing well with flesh and eggs. Steel head fishing has been hit or miss but my most productive runs have been producing fish every day.. The Steel head runs seem to be sporadic this year than like other years and the streams on the lower peninsula are dirty from the rainfall. This is probably why the fishing seems to be sporadic? KENAI RIVER SILVER SALMON AND RAINBOW TROUT

Kenai River silver salmon and Rainbow trout fishing has been excellent! Guided fishing trips are available and with your help we will design a trip that best suites your vacation. Available trips are drift boat, power boat, walk and wade and fly out fishing trips with spin or fly tackle.

Rainbow trout Fishing on the Kenai river has been excellent and this will remain through the freeze up . Fly Out Silver Salmon fishing has been very good as well. The trips that we have taken this year have all ended up in good weather and good fishing. The chance in Alaska for bad weather to set in is always in the back of my mind but luck has been on our side this year. The Kenai and Kasilof are both only fishing fair for Silver salmon this week. However, this should pick up in the near future. Give me a call if you want to catch a few large Rainbows or Silver salmon. I still have a few days available in late August and September.
