Looking for a Kenai Peninsula Deep Creek steelhead fishing Guide? We can help you out with a guided trip on this beautiful small river. We offer 8 hour full day excursions on light tackle or fly rod for Deep Creek. There are many runs that hold good numbers of fish throughout the fall and this is one of my favorite steelhead streams on the Kenai Peninsula. Fresh fish push in with each tide in the fall and there are days where multiple fish are caught. Add a steelhead trip to your Kenai river rainbow trout fishing trip or just pursue steelhead it’s up to you. There have been falls where I spend over 35 days walking the banks of our local steelhead waters and just the thought of hooking up on one keeps me going back. It is steelhead fishing and these contrary fish can be difficult at times but when it is on it is on! The season is here and if you are interested in a hard fighting fish that will reward you with long runs, cartwheels and jumps before you bring it to hand, this is your trip.

www.driftingonthefly.comKenai Peninsula Steelhead Fishing Guide trips will give you a greater chance at success on these hard fighting fish. We have spent much of our time studying and fishing the local Kenai Peninsula steelhead fishing water. The 3 main rivers on the Kenai Peninsula that we fish for steelhead are the Kasilof river, the Anchor river, and Deep Creek. All 3 rivers have great fishing opportunities for sizable steelhead, dolly varden, king salmon and silver salmon.

Kasilof River Steelhead fishing
We will start our kenai peninsula steelhead fishing guide trips out on the Kasilof river. In early to mid April most years the Kasilof river starts to fish well for steelhead. There are good wade fishing opportunities in the start of the season and then drift boat fishing opportunities when the ice is cleared from the launch. The river is shallow at this time of year and fish can be spooky. Swinging flies, dead drifting nymphs and egg patterns and even casting and striping flies has produced steelhead on the Kasilof river. Spring steelhead opportunities will last until about throughout the first week in June. Then the majority of the fish have made their way back to the ocean and will not return until around the first of September. Fall steelhead fishing on the Kasilof river can also produce a lot of fish. Kenai Peninsula steelhead fishing guide Trips will be offered until the middle of October when colder weather usually runs us off the river. Kasilof river steelhead fishing guide trips are offered to both spin and fly anglers.
Anchor river and Deep Creek steelhead fishing
The Anchor river and Deep Creek are also located on the Kenai Peninsula and are walk and wade fishing streams only. We have explored and fished these rivers for years as well and know them by heart and timing. Steelhead usually start to show up here in late august but we don’t really start targeting steelhead until the second week in September. These streams are smaller than the Kasilof river but have produced a lot of fish. I have seen tides bring in a big push of fish and between a couple of anglers have hooked up on dozens of fish. Again swinging and nymph fishing will catch fish but egg patterns will dominate. These fish like resident rainbow trout key in on the salmon spawn and can’t resist the right size and color combination!

Kenai peninsula steel head fishing
Dolly Varden are a real bonus fish while Fishing for steelhead on the Kenai peninsula . This morning the bite was on in a few holes and we just happened to be there while it was going on.
This Steel head was hooked and released in very shallow water. When approaching any body of water make sure you take a second to look and see if any fish might be close enough you could spook by just walking up to the edge of the water. You might be making your first couple of cast standing back in the bushes to not spook these fish
Once you have covered the water closer to shore then you can make your way further out into the stream. Most of the Kenai Peninsula steel head fishing is done in smaller streams and rivers. They are easily accessible and in most places you can wade across the river. This makes it nice for chasing those big ocean run steel head up and down the river too!
Today is the Rainbow Trout season opener on the Kenai River, June 11th. Get out your smolt and flesh fly patterns and enjoy some potentially great rainbow trout fishing. This is a great time of year to pursue trout, they are hungry and willing to take traditional flies, which is always a lot of fun. The mouth of the Kenai River from Skilak lake five miles down stream is closed to all motorized vessels until June 15th! This is set into place because of the trumpeter swans that are nesting in the area.

Fall Rainbow trout fishing on the kenai river has been very good this fall. Friends and clients are all getting into big fish and lots of them. Follow the sockeye salmon and you will be sure to find a concentration of quality rainbow trout. Flesh flies are starting to really produce some good fish as well. The fishing season is coming to an end fast but there is still time to get out on the river with us one more time. We offer a quality guided fishing operation and would love to show you what we know about this area.

This picture is of Kim Sager with a 30 inch rainbow trout caught in the kenai river canyon this fall. Kim has been fly fishing this area for years and this is the biggest fish she has landed. A monster Kenai river rainbow isn’t landed on every trip but the odds definitely go up when you fish where they live. If you think that you may like to fish this season call asap to reserve your spot. Only a few more weeks of fishing and limited spots are available!

When fishing if I have the opportunity to get above a hole and watch for a minute, I take full advantage. Spotting Kenai river rainbow trout is difficult in the glacier tented water but it can be done. Watching over a gravel bar can be the most productive. Early in the spring rainbows on the kenai river will cruise in search of food, so look for flashes, anything that is moving, and dark objects that just don’t belong. Polarized sun glasses really help in this situation.
We spent a few minutes watching this gravel bar, being above it gives you a real advantage in spotting fish.
This is a picture lower on the gravel bar, you can see how the higher you get the better the chance of spotting a fish. I have been watching fish move on and off of it for a few minutes now. It’s time to get a line wet.
Take the time on your next outing to just watch for a minute and you’ll be surprised on how many fish you start to see.

Fishing the Kenai river Alaska is picking up more and more every day now!
The Kasilof river is producing a few Steel head and it should be getting better with every change of the tide now.
Jody Steed with a good steel head caught this past week on a wade fishing trip on the Kasilof River.
The Kenai River also produced a few rainbow trout for us on the following day. The skies were clear, air temp was around 50 but we did have to battle the wind all day.
This huge Rainbow trout was caught on an olive, Murray’s Helgramite, size 8. This fly pattern can be found at www.murraysflyshop.com, it works great as a leech pattern in AK as well as for a helgramite/leech pattern for small mouth bass in Virginia. When out this time of year make sure to keep your eyes open for ice floating down the kenai river!
Be sure to contact us at www.driftingonthefly.com when you are looking for your next AK guided fishing trip on the kenai river. We are taking bookings for the upcoming season and will be happy to get you hooked up.

THERE CAN BE SOME VERY GOOD KENAI RIVER DRY FLY FISHING. June is a great month to be in the middle of some great caddis hatches in Alaska. Smaller rivers and lakes on the Kenai peninsula have been the most productive when I am look for Rainbow trout on dry flies. Also look at the side channels of the Kenai river, there are some great place to find some rainbow trout eager to take a dry fly. Once the salmon show up in good numbers you can fish a dry fly all day long and never have a trout look up. When you do find fish looking up make sure you have a few caddis patterns to fall back on.I’m a huge fan of peacock hurl, I mix it into most of my favorite patterns.Brown or olive caddis patterns in a size 12 is a go to for us in June.Have a great time tying and we’ll catch you next time, give us a call to book your next Alaska Kenai river guide trip and if the timing is right we will dry fly fish the Kenai river for rainbow trout!
