FLY FISHING FOR KING SALMON

RICH KETTERMAN KING SALMON Fly fishing for king salmon on the Kenai Peninsula! How about a few busted knuckles? I narrowly escaped with mine intact yesterday while . We were fishing about 100 yards from the saltwater and when I hooked him, he decided he didn’t like the fresh water anymore. I have to say that I have never had any fish, run that hard in the fresh water!  This king salmon took an olive articulated egg sucking leach at the end of the swing. The fishing has been great this time of the year. The King Salmon are starting to increase in numbers though it has taken a little while for them to get going. It has been a cool Spring in South central Alaska and this affects everything, even the salmon run. This has however been my most productive Spring season with a fly rod for King Salmon though and I can only hope it keeps going that way. Are you interested in learning how to fly fish for a few tackle busting King Salmon? Give me a call 907-382-6808 and we can arrange for that to happen in short order on your next kenai peninsula guide trip with Drifting on the Fly! Tight Lines, Scott Sager Drifting On The Fly, LLC

Silver Salmon Fly Fishing

copy-of-600.jpg

When I think of Salmon on the fly rod I think Silver Salmon fly fishing.  The fishing typically gets good by mid to late July on some of our fly out fishing and mid Aug. to the end of Oct. on the Kenai peninsula and the kenai river.  In the right conditions silver salmon will take the fly very aggressively.  I’ve even had many opportunities to take these fish on top water.  Bunny flies, articulated flies, marabou flies, leaches, spoon flies, etc. are just a few patterns that will work well for these fish.  I find a slow strip in slow water or swinging your flies in faster water draw the most strikes.  I prefer a strip set or scissor strike to set the hook.  This way if you miss the fish you don’t pull the streamer out of the strike zone and often the fish will come back to give you a second chance.  If you are fishing from a boat make sure you fish the fly all the way back to the boat.  I see fish chasing all the way to the boat for a last chance strike. If you are interested in matching your skills with these fish make sure you contact me at www.driftingonthefly.com and we’ll get you lined up on a alaska fishing guide tip. Homer King Salmon Derby

copy-of-hunting-069.jpgcopy-of-hunting-068.jpg copy-of-hunting-064.jpg Due to bad weather the winter Homer king salmon derby was delayed until this past sunday.  There were 792 fishermen in the derby and 92 fish caught.  The odds don’t sound very good but there were 20 more fish caught this year than last year.  Boats are lined up along the bluff trolling for the Homer king salmon derby winning fish.  The fishing isn’t fast and furious but what a great place to spend the day on the water.   I fished with some good friends from around the Kenai Peninsula.  We had a great day but ended up with no king salmon on the boat.  It was a great way to get out and spend the day on the water and I highly recommend it to anyone that would like to experience Alaskas fishing.  There is not a lot of fishing going on the Kenai peninsula this early in the spring and it gives us a chance to get out and get a line wet.  If you would like to participate in the Homer king salmon derby contact me at www.driftingonthefly.com and I will get you lined up. Shenandoah smallmouth bass fishing

copy-of-hunting-055.jpgcopy-of-hunting-050.jpg Shenandoah smallmouth bass fishing can be very good in the spring.  The days are getting longer and it seems that you can get a lot more done.  Two  weeks ago I visited my home town of Strasburg, VA for my grandparents 65th wedding anniversary!  It was a very nice but a short visit.  I did get a chance to fish for only a few  hours with the folks at Murrays fly shop (www.murraysflyshop.com).  We fished the north fork of the Shenandoah river throwing leaches with a slow retrieve.  I managed to land a 10-12″ smallmouth and John  landed a solid 12″ fish.  It was nice to get out and see that the fish were willing to play. copy-of-hunting-052.jpg Thanks and there will be more posts this week and a few pictures. Kenai River Rainbow Trout Fishing

copy-of-41.jpg

Kenai river rainbow trout fishing on the Upper river today.  This young man caught one of the largest upper kenai river rainbow trout that I have landed on my boat. Kids should have all the luck! Landing Big upper kenai river rainbow trout on light tackle or fly is a real treat. The current is swift and there are many obstacles that can end a battle with a big fish quickly. So many times a fish like this will out play the most experience fisher person. A long run a couple of jumps and some good luck and this fish fell to the net and got to pose for the camera.  The Kenai river offers good fishing from the start of the system all the way to the end of the system.  Depending on timing and what is happening on the river will determine which section of river we will pursue.  I often fish the upper kenai river in the fall. Guided kenai river rainbow trout fishing trips cost 275.00 per person for walk and wade, drift boat fishing or power boat fishing. Tight Lines, Scott Sager Drifting On The Fly, LLC

COLD WEATHER FISHING

Cold weather fishing on the kenai river! Need a fishing fix? The Kenai River has good wintertime Dolly Varden fishing ,rainbow trout and is low enough to easily wade fish, unless your rod ends up like this one. I am afraid it’s there until Spring Break-Up??? Guided Kenai River Fly Fishing with a fly rod that’s not frozen in it’s holder When the temperatures dip and the snow falls we tend to slow down a little and wait until the warmest parts of the day to go fishing.  Daylight isn’t as long now and we have to make the best of the last few trips of the year.  Mostly steelhead fishing and rainbow trout on the kenai river is what we prefer but don’t count out some late season silver salmon fishing.  This can make for an exciting day out on the water and casting longer distances can keep a guy warm!.
