WHEN TO COME DOLLY VARDEN FISHING

WHEN TO COME DOLLY VARDEN FISHING ON THE KENAI RIVER. Alaska Dolly Varden on a fly rod! What an experience – Guided Alaska Dolly Varden Fly Fishing on the Kenai River or one of the many surrounding streams. Drift Boat or wade fishing trips can both be quite productive for Dolly Varden. wayne leslie June starts the Dolly Varden season on many of the streams we regularly guide including the Kenai River. We typically start the season fishing standard streamer patterns such as muddlers, sculpins, leech patterns, and flesh flies. As the Salmon increase in numbers the Dolly’s tend to move into the Salmon spawning grounds. Here they fatten up on salmon flesh and eggs. Targeting Dolly’s involves locating these spawning areas and matching what the Dolly’s are feeding on; fresh eggs, old eggs, flesh… any of which will work from day to day; we call it Match-the-Hatch – Alaska Style. Dolly Fishing continues through the month of October and typically cold weather chases us off the river before they stop feeding. 2011 Guided River Trip Rate $250 per person *LARGE GROUPS WELCOME *LODGING PACKAGES AVAILABLE *EXCLUSIVE BOAT PACKAGES -2 PERSON EXCLUSIVE STARTING AT $750.00 A DAY -3 PERSON EXCLUSIVE STARTING AT $950.00 A DAY contact details, business phone: 907-382-6808 or send an inquiry here!

KENAI RIVER KING SALMON FISHING

First run of Kenai River King Salmon Opportunities at for kenai river king salmon fishing starts in early to the middle of May.  Our drift boat makes is possible to navigate through the shallow Kenai River and get to concentrated first runs of king salmon.  By the first of June the Kenai river is usually high enough that we will start running our powerboat until the end of King Salmon season on the Kenai River.  The best thing about being here for the first run of king salmon is there is much less competition on the water.  The run isn’t as big as the July run of kings and is not as popular.  This is sometimes beneficial to the anglers because of fewer boats on the water.  The first run of king salmon peaks in numbers by the middle of June and strong daily numbers will appear until the second run start to show up. Second run of Kenai river king salmon The second run of king salmon is bigger on average than the first run of fish.  This is a very popular run of king salmon because they appear in the summer.  The Kenai Peninsula in the nicest month is indescribable.  There are two to three times more fish in the second run of king salmon on the Kenai River than the first run. The use of bait also opens July first (sometimes earlier).  The use of bait opens more techniques in which we can pursue these fish.  Wrapping quick fish for example tends to produce more fish than an unwrapped one most of the time.  We also back bounce, back troll, and side drift with cured eggs.  The second run has a lot of good characteristics but it also brings in a lot more pressure to the river.   When it comes to pursuing a trophy don’t rule out the first run because the standing world record was caught in May! Cost for guide trip: *$275.00 plus tax per person a day *packages available *Drift and Power boat trips available *Large groups welcome, we fish up to 4 people per trip per guide boat *Exclusive boat prices available! STEELHEAD FISHING THE KENAI PENINSULA

Steelhead fishing the Kenai Peninsula has been the best I have experienced this fall! The fishing continues to be great and as of right now the stream levels are perfect. We have seen days on fly out trips and on the Kenai peninsula of hooking up to 40 fish a day for the group.  Fish have been taking leeches on the swing and egg patterns on the dead drift.  The dead drift seems to be the most effective for us.  Our patterns used have been tweaked over the last 10 years and are proven in rivers throughout the state and in many rivers in the lower 48 now.  Average fish are around 30 inches and many fish are caught in the 35 inch range every year.   If you are interested in a guide trip on the kenai peninsula feel free to look us up.  I offer both walk in and drift boat fishing for steelhead.  Fly fishing or spin opportunities are available to get you hooked up on an acrobatic fish. Exclusive guided rates are available if you want to keep your group small and personal. Tight Lines, Scott Drifting On The Fly, LLC

Kasilof River Guide

If you are looking for a good, dependable, and knowledgeable Kasilof river guide, look no further! I have spent many days through out the last 8 years studying and fishing the Kasilof river.  We will put you in the best runs that we can and give you the best opportunity to catch a fish of a lifetime.  King Salmon on the Kasilof river can be a challenge to catch but with some patients and good coaching I am confident that you will have a successful trip.

This week proved to be another good week for the Kasilof River for King Salmon fishing.  The Dewey family did some back trolling out of the drift boat on Monday with me and this fish flat out smoked us.  It hit a smaller pink cheater with a little glob of cured eggs.  The river has finally come up to normal level and we have had to start fishing with size 40 jet divers.  This kasilof river is mainly a terminal gear fishery but it is still a drift boat only river which makes for a relaxing day.

Congrats to Eric and Kelly we wish you two the best and good luck with the upcoming wedding.

thanks guys and see you next year

SHIP CREEK

Today I got off work, removed my studded tires and got my all terrains back on the truck. After I got my chores done I found time to go and explore a stream here in Anchorage. Ship Creek is a well known Salmon run river that holds a few Rainbow trout too. I didn’t spend much time fishing it but it did produce a couple of small rainbows. I was using a Murray hellgrammite size 10, dead drifting it. That fly seems to produce more fish for me than any other in my fly box! I don’t know if it is confidence or what.. but I tend to tie this fly own my line more times than not when I approach new water.  I have never fished salmon in this stream but I understand that it can produce quit a few fish during the peak of the seasons as well.

I’m moving back down to the Kenai peninsula next week to get gear ready for the upcoming season. Dates are booking up fast so if your interested in a 2008 Drift Boat Fishing  guide trip on the kenai river, reserve your spots soon. We hope everyone is enjoying the spring and we look forward to fishing with you. Tight lines, Scott Sager www.driftingonthefly.com scott@driftingonthefly.com 907-382-6808
