Scott Sager Seward Alaska hiking
I took off on a 3 day trip to Seward Alaska hiking a few days ago. The alpine trail is just a 30 minute boat ride away from the harbor. You can charter a transporter by boat to get you there or if the tides are right you can also hike the shore line around. It is a 6 mile loop system that takes you into the higher elevations and back around to where you started or you can take the trail to the top of the mountain. Seward Alaska has a lot to offer from fishing, sight seeing, glacier tours, hiking and many other things. When your on a trip to Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula I highly recommend taking time to make Seward one of your stops.
Here are a few pictures of the scenic trip.
This is where we made camp in the High country. Picking a spot with a good water source is key if you plan on staying for anytime at all.
I don’t do enough hiking and every time I start a climb I mumble to myself why am I doing this but it is definitely worth is when you wake up to a view like this.

The Kenai Peninsula fall is short but the peak colors can be beautiful if you catch them right. It is just about peak And in a couple more days and the leaves will fall and winter will be here for the most part. Termination dust is starting to top the mountains and the hills are starting to look a little more bear now. Along the Kenai river the views are spectacular right now. Cool mornings and almost 65 degrees in the afternoon make for my favorite time of year. The rainbow trout, silver salmon and steel head fishing are in full swing right now. I am finding that the silver salmon fishing is very good. I have had a good time back trolling, casting spinners and casting flies at these acrobatic salmon. most of our fish have been very bright and we haven’t had to release very many due to being in the river to long yet. Silver salmon fishing should continue to be good through the month. The Kenai Peninsula falls have a lot to offer from spectacular views to excellent fishing!

click here to book Alaska state fair
My guest yesterday morning showed up at the boat launch and we headed out silver salmon fishing for a half day trip. We had a few follows, a few spit the hook and caught some pink salmon but didn’t land any of the fish that we were pursuing.
After a few minutes I had learned that this husband wife team was on tour with Alter bridge that had just performed at the Alaska state fair. Unfortunately they had to cancel their trip for today Because of another concert in philly. I enjoyed hearing their stories and look forward to having them back on the boat in the future.
I’d like to go to the fair one year. After 10 years in Alaska I still haven’t been yet. Life in the fast lane I guess!

Drifting On The Fly
Sterling Alaska
Beers by the campfire last night in Sterling Alaska. Days are getting shorter but in the middle of August you know that it is still late when the sun goes down. The dogs are loving it and what a great way to spend an evening. Being laid back and enjoying good company is living life here in sterling Alaska. In sterling Alaska there is camping, horseback riding, hiking, conoing, fishing, boating, and many other things to do on vacation. Troy and lisa have some great trail horses and we are discussing which trail we should go riding on in a few weekends. The upper end of the swanson river is also accessed through sterling alaska. If you are planning to conoe the swanson river trail system give us a call. We have done this trip many times and are willing to give any advice that we can. Off to work in the early morning so I’d better be heading to bed!
Rainbow trout and silver salmon season is here!! The Kenai river is producing some good first run silver salmon this year and the trout fishing has been epic.

Driftingonthefly Alaska garden
A good friend of mine lives in sterling Alaska. Every time I visit him he is working on a very elaborate project! This summer he has finished his raised bed Alaska garden and fence. When Ray makes anything you can bet it isn’t half way done.
When he was peeling the logs by hand, i asked if he might be building another cabin like the one he built last summer. He said “no, these logs are for a fence to keep the moose out”! Fair enough
Here is a picture of the cabin he finished last year. I’ve been in a few Alaska log cabins and even though this one isn’t but about 800 square foot it has as much character as any cabin I’ve ever been in. Not to mention the matching out houses behind it!
A little hard work and a creative mind keeps this 74 year old man building all kinds of cool things every year. Ray is an inspiration to everyone he meets and I can only hope to work as hard as he does when I am in my mid 70’s.

Www.driftingonthefly.com Life in sterling alaska
Life in sterling Alaska along the kenai river is very laid back. After a long 17 hour day fishing for sockeye salmon on the kenai river I was looking forward to hanging with the neighbors by the camp fire.
Daylight is almost still around the clock so you can defiantly get a lot done in a day if you’re motivated enough to. Often I’m asked how you even sleep with so much daylight and I answer: ” you have to go hard enough that it doesn’t matter how light it is outside!”
Enjoy your vacations here and please be safe.

If you ever loose an anchor and don’t have a spare, improvise by using a rock as a drift boat anchor. This guy said he just prefers a rock anchor over a lead anchor so he uses it all the time!
Guided Kasilof river king salmon fishing trips are a lot of fun. You never know what you are going to see or experience.
