Alaska fly out fishing

Alaska fly out fishing is one of the best ways to see the state and to get into some of the best fly fishing waters in the world. Today we fished for arctic grayling in a high mountain setting. The folks caught over a hundred fish with some reaching 16-17 inches. On a 4 weight fly rod with 6x tippet, the larger fish put up an excellent struggle. Some won and some didn’t. All of them were put back unharmed for the next group though! If you are interest in some of the best grayling fishing that i have found on the fly or light spin give us a call anytime. 20130727-085315.jpg20130727-085330.jpg20130727-085322.jpg20130727-085359.jpg 20130727-085434.jpg 20130727-085442.jpg 20130727-085455.jpg 20130727-085503.jpg 20130727-085516.jpg Prices vary depending on the length of the flight.

Alaska fly out fishing

The trip was a success yesterday. The day started off by walking the river, fishing our way down down stream. Fishing was very slow until the tide change in the afternoon. Once this happened fishing was excellent. I didn’t get any pictures of fish today because there was so many bears around. Once the fish showed up the bears showed up. The guys couldn’t believe the experience they where getting and came back with some heavy poundage of silver salmon.  We are off to fish rainbow trout on the Kenai river.  The number one policy of any remote Alaska fly out fishing trip is safety first fishing second.  If you are on a fly out with us and bears approach the stream to fish we will back off until they are a safe distance away.  This will ensure that they don’t look to humans as a source of a easy meal and we disturb their natural habits as little as possible. Fly Out Fishing Trip

A fly out fishing trip in Alaska is a bit more expensive due to the cost of the flight but if you are interested in fishing around more bears than people this is sometimes the only option.  The group and I showed up just a little early this morning at the flight service for our fly out fishing trip. I like to have time to go through my gear one more time before take off And not be in a rush. Today’s weather outlook is great. It should be as good of a day as you can get for flying in the Alaska mountain. We are headed out to chase silver salmon on the fly today. The tide and timing should be excellent for being successful but no matter what the trip will be beautiful. 20120829-072323.jpg   20120829-072336.jpg 20120829-072352.jpg 20120829-072403.jpg Tim from Natron air in Soldotna Alaska has flown me out with guest many times now. He has a well maintained, clean and reliable plane.  It’s quit an experience landing on a beach in the middle of no where.  Depending on where we fly will determine if we use a wheeled plane or a plane on floats. I will report in on the trip when we get back after we get back. Tight lines Scott Sager Www.driftingonthefly.com

backcountry fishing

I have the day off today and am heading out with a buddy on a back country fishing trip for  rainbow trout today. A short 30 minute flight out of anchorage and you can be in some great remote trout waters. I’ll give a report and a few pictures later on how it was! 20120627-113019.jpg This picture of our camp was taken along the Sag river near dead horse Alaska. Arctic char and grayling can be found here in good numbers when the water is flowing.  When traveling north to fish make sure you have your timing right.  There are many factors into getting the most out of your backcountry fishing trip.  Weather, time, money, timing, and so on.  Research your trip before talking to a guide service so that you have some knowledge of the timing of the runs and average weather condition for when you would like to go.  For instance king salmon season closes on the night of the July 31st on the Kenai river but in a lot of the systems king salmon season closes much earlier than July 31st?  This might help with the timing of your vacation if you really want to fish for king salmon.

Silver Salmon Fly Fishing

copy-of-600.jpg

When I think of Salmon on the fly rod I think Silver Salmon fly fishing.  The fishing typically gets good by mid to late July on some of our fly out fishing and mid Aug. to the end of Oct. on the Kenai peninsula and the kenai river.  In the right conditions silver salmon will take the fly very aggressively.  I’ve even had many opportunities to take these fish on top water.  Bunny flies, articulated flies, marabou flies, leaches, spoon flies, etc. are just a few patterns that will work well for these fish.  I find a slow strip in slow water or swinging your flies in faster water draw the most strikes.  I prefer a strip set or scissor strike to set the hook.  This way if you miss the fish you don’t pull the streamer out of the strike zone and often the fish will come back to give you a second chance.  If you are fishing from a boat make sure you fish the fly all the way back to the boat.  I see fish chasing all the way to the boat for a last chance strike. If you are interested in matching your skills with these fish make sure you contact me at www.driftingonthefly.com and we’ll get you lined up on a alaska fishing guide tip.
