Kasilof king salmon fishing

Spending the day with a great group on the kasilof river.  After Kasilof king salmon fishing today I’ll be enjoying a fresh king salmon on the BBQ to bring in the summer solstice right! Have fun and be safe. 20120620-123426.jpg The kasilof river is a drift boat only fishery for king salmon so the option to go back to the boat launch doesn’t exist until the end of the fishing day.  Here are a few things that you will need to make sure you have for a Kasilof king salmon fishing trip: -rain gear, pants and jacket, we have rain gear available if you let us know at the boat launch – king salmon stamp – valid alaska fishing license -packed lunch, we will have coffee, water and snacks on the boat -extra clothing in case you get wet or cold remember we are rowing the river so keep your cooler (if you bring one) reasonable.  I’ve seen 200 pound coolers before and it is like rowing with another person in the boat.

Fly fishing for salmon

A couple pictures of some friends fly fishing for salmon in Alaska 20120617-190733.jpg Casting slightly up and across will give your fly time to sink a little before the swing.  I find that on the when the fly just start to swing i get most of my takes. When fly fishing for salmon in stronger currents a heavy fly and or a sink tip is recommended but is not necessary in situations.  I will choose which size of fly rod i will carry after I have chosen the size of flies that I will be using for the days fishing.  All Salmon have strong mouths and some weight to them so when you set the hook make sure you set it like you mean it.  For the most part you will have a strong enough leader for the fish you are pursuing and in glacier tinted waters you don’t have to worry so much about them being line shy.  Beef it up and set it with authority. 20120617-190741.jpg Wading in glacial waters can be difficult because of visibility.  A good rule is never wade more than knee deep while you are fishing.  I find that this keeps me out of trouble with the deceiving currents and it also allows me to recover faster if I do go down.

Drift boat anchor

If you ever loose an anchor and don’t have a spare, improvise by using a rock as a drift boat anchor. This guy said he just prefers a rock anchor over a lead anchor so he uses it all the time! 20120613-171008.jpg Guided Kasilof river king salmon fishing trips are a lot of fun.  You never know what you are going to see or experience. KENAI RIVER KING SALMON FISHING

First run of Kenai River King Salmon Opportunities at for kenai river king salmon fishing starts in early to the middle of May.  Our drift boat makes is possible to navigate through the shallow Kenai River and get to concentrated first runs of king salmon.  By the first of June the Kenai river is usually high enough that we will start running our powerboat until the end of King Salmon season on the Kenai River.  The best thing about being here for the first run of king salmon is there is much less competition on the water.  The run isn’t as big as the July run of kings and is not as popular.  This is sometimes beneficial to the anglers because of fewer boats on the water.  The first run of king salmon peaks in numbers by the middle of June and strong daily numbers will appear until the second run start to show up. Second run of Kenai river king salmon The second run of king salmon is bigger on average than the first run of fish.  This is a very popular run of king salmon because they appear in the summer.  The Kenai Peninsula in the nicest month is indescribable.  There are two to three times more fish in the second run of king salmon on the Kenai River than the first run. The use of bait also opens July first (sometimes earlier).  The use of bait opens more techniques in which we can pursue these fish.  Wrapping quick fish for example tends to produce more fish than an unwrapped one most of the time.  We also back bounce, back troll, and side drift with cured eggs.  The second run has a lot of good characteristics but it also brings in a lot more pressure to the river.   When it comes to pursuing a trophy don’t rule out the first run because the standing world record was caught in May! Cost for guide trip: *$275.00 plus tax per person a day *packages available *Drift and Power boat trips available *Large groups welcome, we fish up to 4 people per trip per guide boat *Exclusive boat prices available! I had the pleasure of fishing with my family on the last day of King salmon season and this 53″ Buck took an orange spin and gloe with some cured salmon eggs.  We ended up landing this fish more than a mile from where it was hooked!! This is a very large King salmon caught on the Kasilof river and everyone is very proud of it.  Our boat has been fishing good and this is a great way to end the King salmon season here in Alaska.   Though king fishing season is over look for more pictures and info about king fishing with us in the future from us.   The  season is really not that far away so if you are interested in a prime date be sure to book early. The last three weeks in July on the Kenai Peninsula seem to book faster and faster each year. Guided kasilof or Kenai river King salmon fishing can be a great experience like my family had when you are with a guide that takes pride in his job Tight lines, Scott

This is one of the 3 fish these two guys caught this day!  On the Kasilof river you do not have to quit fishing if you have harvested a fish.  Though we try not to take bites away from other fisherman you will have a line in the water if everyone hasn’t limited out for the day!  Odds are better drift boat fishing the Kasilof river. We have stepped it up to a 30″ leader with a large egg orange cheater behind a # 40 diver.  This set up is sure to produce a fish if presented right and time out is spent. tight lines, Scott www.driftingonthefly.com
