Great Day on the Kenai River

great day on the kenai river and I hope the weather that we have been having lasts! The mornings have been cooler and clear, by mid day the temperatures have been in the mid 70’s. The weather and the great push of sockeye salmon has been a real treat for us after a cooler spring. The total estimated count for the Kenai river sockeye salmon is over one million fish now!! The numbers of salmon and good weather has brought people from all over to the Kenai peninsula. Today I saw two different float planes parked and out fishing for reds. This is not uncommon but it’s great to see people that could go anywhere in the state of Alaska choosing to fish our great Kenai river. Good weather Great fishing makes for an awesome day! Float planes often use the middle kenai river. The fishing is good and there are plenty of places to park and get the plane safely out of the current.

Sockeye salmon fishing in the afternoon can be very productive on the Kenai river. The peak season to fish for sockeye salmon is about July 12th through August 10th most years. Ocean run fish have there own schedule though and these dates can very on either or both ends by a few days. Good sockeye salmon fishing can be accessed in many areas that you can walk into but this is a very popular time of year and these areas can be very congested. This is probably the best reason for hiring Drifting on the Fly for a day trip. We will do our best to find you a productive gravel bar that is not as busy as some of the road side accessible spots. Though there still might be people around it shouldn’t be elbow to elbow. These folks traveled to Alaska from Arkansas to try their luck out on the Kenai river for sockeye salmon and did very well. The afternoon fishing can be as good as the morning fishing. Usually others have limited out or called it quits. This means we have a good chance at getting on a great gravel bar. Guided Sockeye salmon fishing on the kenai river allows us to put you in productive and less crowded areas. Like everyday we showed up at the on a Kenai river gravel bar just after day light. The fish are passing through a Little slower today but we have managed to land a half dozen sockeye salmon. July weather tends to be very nice on the Kenai Peninsula most years and the scenery is as good as it gets.

A couple things to remember on your Sockeye salmon fishing trip with us is your fishing license, a change of cloths, a packed lunch and of cloths and extra pair of socks!! The water temperature is still slightly under 50 degrees so standing in the water with waders on can chill your feet down in a hurry. Fishing for sockeye salmon is done mostly off of gravel bars wade fishing. Taking a break once in a while allows you to stay warm for a full days fishing. Kenai river sockeye salmon and rainbow trout fishing trips with Drifting on the Fly’s guide service. Kenai river sockeye salmon and rainbow trout fishing combination trips can be a long day on the water but provide a great experience of the river. Our full day trips are advertised at 8 hours but many days go on a little longer. I met up with one of my Alaska resident fishing groups early to get our waders on and gear ready this morning. The kids eager to get out on the river but the early mornings make them move a little slower.

Starting out on the lower Kenai river with some sockeye salmon fishing. The kids had a great time and caught a few salmon but really wanted to go after a big Kenai river rainbow trout. Early in the sockeye salmon run I target fish directly behind cleaning stations and were carcasses tend to pile up. This proved to be where most of the rainbow trout were today! Nothing big but that doesn’t matter when you are catching fish. Good job guys and I’m looking forward to next weekend.

Kenai river salmon fishing starts early in the day and will last eight hours on a full day trip. We will coordinate on the meeting place and start time prior to the fishing trip. Running up the Kenai river in the early morning can be chilly, even In July! Remember to bring a few extra layers to remain comfortable. Also sunglasses and a favorite hat is highly recommended.

Once we arrived on the gravel bar we quickly warmed up with some great kenai river salmon fishing! A limit of reds are harder to find early in the season but with persistance and good techniques you should be able to put some fish on the bank. After a day of good fishing for sockeye salmon these anglers will be headed home with some salmon and memories of fishing the Kenai river. After a solid two weeks of Kenai river sockeye salmon fishing, we’ve done well about every day. I have notice that the for the amount of reds that fish and game clams that are in the Kenai river the fishing hasn’t beenis as epic as it should be. It’s not bad but I am wondering were these huge numbers are? Yesterday six of us fished for 8.5 hours and managed to get our limit of 18 sockeye salmon. The fishing was consistent and we probably hooked 30 more fish or so and released some fowl hooked fish too.

July weather couldn’t be better here on the Kenai Peninsula and fresh fish are everywhere. Hiring a guide will help you get to more productive gravel bars and allow you to get a little space in between other groups of fisherman as well. Another beautiful day fishing for sockeye salmon on the Kenai river, If the days continue to be this nice I’ll think I’m some where else other than Alaska. The weather has been great and so has the kenai river Salmon fishing! We had our fish in less than an hour yesterday and then moved on to rainbow trout fishing. After we are finished salmon fishing I will clean your fish for you on the river. By doing this on the river we offer food back into the system for other species and that way I know you get the most out of your harvest. The rainbow trout and dolly Varden fishing was a little slower but with some work we found a concentration of fish and managed to pull the day of successful.

With so many sockeye in the river I believe that it Freaks the rainbow trout out for a few days. Now there are enough carcasses in the river that the trout should start to really key in on them! In a few days though a fresh flesh fly will do very well just down stream of the sockeye salmon anglers. Kenai river sockeye salmon fishing has been excellent! The Kenai River got a push of just under 120,000 sockeye salmon yesterday For a total of around 200,000 fish for the second run. These are great numbers of fish and getting a few shouldn’t be a problem for the next few weeks!!! This morning I had a great crew and they had there fish in just a few hours. Once you have your limit of kenai river sockeye salmon you don’t have to quit fishing. We can then pursue other species like rainbow trout and dolly varden.

A nice limit of fish like this will keep your freezer stocked up with fresh sockeye salmon for months, if you book multiple days of fishing you could have salmon to eat throughout the year. Drift boat king salmon fishing on the Kasilof river today! The morning has been good with a few king salmon caught. Since the kasilof and Kenai river has gone to catch and release with artificial lurers only, the bite has been on par to what “I” think it should be. This fish took us through two holes to land it and the guest said it was the most epic battle he has ever had and has king salmon fished his whole life. He was happy to release it and said he wouldn’t have killed it even if he could. For a great day on The river and a chance to catch a really big king salmon the kasilof river is producing fish right now.

It is hard work fishing for king Salmon and can take some patients too but the reward is well worth it. The fish will weigh in the high 30 pound range and is fresh in from the ocean. The best time to catch a king salmon is when it first enters the river. They are full of energy and will flat out punish you.
