KingFisher Restaurant

After a good day of fishing the upper Kenai river fishing for rainbow trout and dolly Varden we decided to have dinner at the kingfisher restaurant.  The KingFisher restaurant is located just above the waters edge on Kenai lake, excellent food and one of the best views of any restaurant I’ve been to.  Plus I really enjoy the IPA that is on tap. 20120909-094015.jpg Leaving the kingfisher full and ready to hit the water after sleeping off a large meal. 20120909-094100.jpg Paddle boarding is getting popular on the kenai peninsula.  Although I did see a group going down the kenai river the other day and with the boat traffic I don’t know that I would recommend that or not?  Probably not! 20120909-094110.jpg While at dinner we had a table over looking Kenai Lake and this brilliant rainbow appeared.  I’ve seen this view many times but the rainbow had me gazing out over the lake like it was the first time again.  All in all I think that if you are in or passing through Cooper Landing Alaska the KingFisher Restaurant is well worth making time for.

Alaska fishing and hunting

20120905-234203.jpg Alaska fishing and hunting on the Kasilof river!  Yesterday morning my friend Brian Richards of wilderness way in Soldotna Alaska and i set out on a day trip that would end up for us to tell our kids about one day. We put my private boat in the river with 5 rods one shotgun and a good dog for an 18 mile venture. By the end of the trip we had taken 5 ducks, caught silver salmon, dolly vardon and hooked a steelhead. Any person that takes a day trip in the outdoors can appreciate this kind of adventure. The best part of our day was watching Tok my black lab do what he lives to do!! ( hunt ). After a year of being cooped up he flawlessly retrieved all the birds and three of them I know we would have never found without him! 20120905-235043.jpg He is not the best bird dog but it’s great to see him after the start of his second hunting season really pull it together. I love to fish but live to hunt and to share it with him is a whole new experience. 20120905-235451.jpg He can be so lazy too!! Check us out at Drifting on the Fly for some great Alaska fishing information or at wilderness way for your out door gear needs. A high tide and a little wind can hold you up for hours if you aren’t prepared for it. Plan on an outgoing tide if you don’t have a little kicker to help you out. 20120906-073349.jpg

20120904-111012.jpg Wilderness Way has a new look to the store front 20120904-111022.jpg 20120904-111027.jpg 20120904-111033.jpg Wilderness way is located in Soldotna Alaska in the heart of the Kenai Peninsula. Alaska state fair

My guest yesterday morning showed up at the boat launch and we headed out silver salmon fishing for a half day trip. We had a few follows, a few spit the hook and caught some pink salmon but didn’t land any of the fish that we were pursuing. After a few minutes I had learned that this husband wife team was on tour with Alter bridge that had just performed at the Alaska state fair. Unfortunately they had to cancel their trip for today Because of another concert in philly. I enjoyed hearing their stories and look forward to having them back on the boat in the future. I’d like to go to the fair one year. After 10 years in Alaska I still haven’t been yet. Life in the fast lane I guess! Half gallon flask club

20120824-213403.jpg 20120824-213413.jpg I got my flask back today from getting engraved! On the back I am planning on engraving your name on it when you catch a 30″ rainbow trout or better and/or a king salmon 50#’s or better. Over the years I haven’t kept as good of track of this accomplishment as I should have and in the future you can bet that I will never forget another one! I know lots of you that are following this blog have fished with me before and am asking you to give me a call, text or email if you have caught a extremely big fish on tape with me and i will be happy to add you to the half gallon flask club! Kasilof river silvers and kenai river trout fishing

20120823-133723.jpg   Kasilof river silvers and kenai river trout fishing combo Got a quick limit of silver salmon yesterday morning on the kasilof river bouncing eggs in the tidal water. The group was interested in some fly fishing so we put the drift boat up and took the power boat out on the Kenai river rainbow trout fishing. The little extra effort really paid off with some big fish!!  This isn’t something we do every day but if there is time we are happy to go the extra mile for you. 20120823-134336.jpg Bright sunny days often put the rainbow’s off the bite.  Today was an exception to that!  When salmon start dropping eggs into the system all bets are off and it should be fish On.   20120823-134406.jpg Trout salmon combo days can be a lot of fun and a lot of work as well.  If we change up gears and switch systems extra half day rates will apply for the afternoon trip. If you would like to get in on a day like this give us a call at 907-382-6808. Tight lines, Scott Sager Drifting On The Fly

Sterling Alaska

20120818-122730.jpg 20120818-122747.jpg Beers by the campfire last night in Sterling Alaska. Days are getting shorter but in the middle of August you know that it is still late when the sun goes down.  The dogs are loving it and what a great way to spend an evening.  Being laid back and enjoying good company is living life here in sterling Alaska.  In sterling Alaska there is camping, horseback riding, hiking, conoing, fishing, boating, and many other things to do on vacation.  Troy and lisa have some great trail horses and we are discussing which trail we should go riding on in a few weekends.  The upper end of the swanson river is also accessed through sterling alaska.  If you are planning to conoe the swanson river trail system give us a call.  We have done this trip many times and are willing to give any advice that we can.  Off to work in the early morning so I’d better be heading to bed! Rainbow trout and silver salmon season is here!!  The Kenai river is producing some good first run silver salmon this year and the trout fishing has been epic. Smoking Alaska sockeye salmon

20120818-095329.jpg Smoking Alaska sockeye salmon takes some time but is well worth it.  Cooling your smoked salmon is very important before packaging it.  Cooling racks can be made just about out of anything but when you are doing a fair amount of fish in the smoker it is nice to have racks stacked like this one. 20120818-095545.jpg Carrying for your catch might mean smoking Alaska sockeye salmon.  There might not be a better treat to my family than pulling a pack of smoked salmon caught on the Kenai river out of the freezer. It is excellent just by itself, made into a cream cheese dip or used to cook with for a meal on the BBQ! Taking care of your harvest is the most important thing we can do. Though for the most part I believe in catch and release for most species of fish, being able to harvest some fresh Alaska sockeye salmon salmon adds a great food source for us throughout the year.  Sockeye salmon season is over for this year but if you would like a guide for next season give us a call early and we can get you lined up on the best date to fish for some kenai river sockeye salmon! Alaska garden

A good friend of mine lives in sterling Alaska. Every time I visit him he is working on a very elaborate project! This summer he has finished his raised bed Alaska garden and fence.  When Ray makes anything you can bet it isn’t half way done. 20120813-134441.jpg When he was peeling the logs by hand, i asked if he might be building another cabin like the one he built last summer. He said “no, these logs are for a fence to keep the moose out”!  Fair enough 20120813-134718.jpg Here is a picture of the cabin he finished last year.  I’ve been in a few Alaska log cabins and even though this one isn’t but about 800 square foot it has as much character as any cabin I’ve ever been in.  Not to mention the matching out houses behind it! A little hard work and a creative mind keeps this 74 year old man building all kinds of cool things every year. Ray is an inspiration to everyone he meets and I can only hope to work as hard as he does when I am in my mid 70’s. Tight lines Scott Sager Www.driftingonthefly.com

Kenai mountains

20120812-145653.jpg This is a very easy ridge to follow for now. Hiking off tail in the Kenai mountains you have to be careful not to get into a place you can’t get out of.  This ridge (mountain) rolls very nice and there are no razor edges but with fog and weather coming in like it is I will hunker down and wait for better weather in the morning. 20120812-145711.jpg A view from on top of a gorgeous peak in Kenai Mountains.  When I woke up the next day a band of Dall sheep were strung out across the ridge line.  They are the main reason I am here but I can’t think of a better place to spend a few days by myself.  The country is rugged and it definitely test all the skills that one has doing it by yourself.  Hiking in Alaska can mean multiple days, so make sure you plan on having all the gear you need or think you might need to be prepared for anything.  Water filter or drops, first aid kit, shelter and adequate clothing will be the difference in life and death if you get into a bad situation.
