Shenandoah Valley fly fishing

I had a chance to get home and fly fish in the Shenandoah national park and Shenandoah valley for a couple of days. Shenandoah valley fly fishing involves a lot of hiking, wade fishing and or drift boat fishing. The weather was OK and the fishing was great. I only had a couple of opportunities to get out with the boys from www.murraysflyshop.com but when I did it was on.

There is nothing big about the trout in Shenandoah nation park but native fish that are thousands of years old and readily taking dry flies makes this fishing as fun as any I have ever done. The beautiful mountain streams can put the most seasoned fishers into a trance. We fished the Rapidan river in Madison county VA on this trip but there are over 50 fish able streams in the park!

Guide John Colman with a nice small mouth on the North Fork of the Shenandoah river. Though the water temperature was colder than we would have liked the fish still cooperated. We caught Small mouth bass, Large mouth bass, sunfish and fall fish. KENAI RIVER

The rainbow trout fishing on the Kenai River should be excellent until the end of the month when the river closes. My last trout trip was last week on the middle Kenai river until the opener in June. To those that are able to get out in the next couple of days. Good Luck!

This is one of my favorite early season patterns but Olive Sculpins have been very productive too. We are taking bookings for the Kenai river and other systems in Alaska now. WINTER FISHING ON THE KENAI RIVER

Winter fishing on the kenai river is much more work than fishing in the summer time, we have way more winter than summer so we have to improvise. The gage in Cooper Landing at the headwaters of Kenai River is reading about 355 cubic feet per second. We should start to see a drastic change in stream flow with melt off and precipitation. Water temperature on the upper river is now around 37 degrees.

MOUNT REDOUBT

On the walk across the Lake to get back to our drift boat I noticed Mount redoubt smoking in the back ground. There has been a little activity coming from mount Redoubt the last few days but nothing to speak of. Hopefully we can start off our season without anymore eruptions? We are gearing up for a day of Rainbow trout fishing on the Kenai River here.

KENAI RIVER RAINBOW TROUT

When fishing if I have the opportunity to get above a hole and watch for a minute, I take full advantage. Spotting Kenai river rainbow trout is difficult in the glacier tented water but it can be done. Watching over a gravel bar can be the most productive. Early in the spring rainbows on the kenai river will cruise in search of food, so look for flashes, anything that is moving, and dark objects that just don’t belong. Polarized sun glasses really help in this situation.

We spent a few minutes watching this gravel bar, being above it gives you a real advantage in spotting fish.

This is a picture lower on the gravel bar, you can see how the higher you get the better the chance of spotting a fish. I have been watching fish move on and off of it for a few minutes now. It’s time to get a line wet. Take the time on your next outing to just watch for a minute and you’ll be surprised on how many fish you start to see. FISHING THE KENAI RIVER ALASKA

Fishing the Kenai river Alaska is picking up more and more every day now! The Kasilof river is producing a few Steel head and it should be getting better with every change of the tide now.

Jody Steed with a good steel head caught this past week on a wade fishing trip on the Kasilof River. The Kenai River also produced a few rainbow trout for us on the following day. The skies were clear, air temp was around 50 but we did have to battle the wind all day.

This huge Rainbow trout was caught on an olive, Murray’s Helgramite, size 8. This fly pattern can be found at www.murraysflyshop.com, it works great as a leech pattern in AK as well as for a helgramite/leech pattern for small mouth bass in Virginia. ALASKA KENAI RIVER FLYFISHING

Alaska Kenai river flyfishing in the Spring is a great time of year to get your streamer fix. Fishing on the Kenai river is way different than it is during the summer months. Most of the silver salmon are done spawning by now but there are a few fish still in the river. I only noticed about a half dozen fish last weekend in the area I was fishing. I chose to swing leeches and minnow patterns on this outing. An olive leech caught the only fish of the day.

I was by myself when this nice Kenai river rainbow trout slammed my leech pattern. When the water is this low and clear I spend more time looking for rainbows than I do casting. These fish are spooky and if you can spot a fish and cast to it you are more likely to catch it than just slinging line blindly in the water. Look for flashes, dark shapes, spooked bait fish, spawning salmon, etc. Once you train your eye, spotting fish becomes easier than you would think. Redoubt Ash

After 7 eruptions Mount Redoubt Ash finally makes its way to Anchorage. The winds have been very cooperative thus far keeping most of the ash to the south and west of anchorage.

If you have to drive during any ash fall it is a good idea to put pantyhose over your air filter. This will help keep harmful dust out of your engine.

We are hanging close to the house tonight and hopefully this little bit of ash fall is all we get. Get out your dust masks! Redoubt has effected Drift River which is near the volcano. Drift river is an anadromous stream, so it will be interesting to see how it effects the returning salmon runs. Mount Redoubt

Mount Redoubt explodes 5 times last night. Winds are carrying the ash north to the Susitna valley and the ash is as high up as 50,000 feet. This is the first time Mount redoubt has blown in 20 years. !9 flights were canceled this morning at Ted Stevens international airport inÂ Anchorage.
