Seward Alaska hiking

I took off on a 3 day trip to Seward Alaska hiking a few days ago.  The alpine trail is just a 30 minute boat ride away from the harbor. You can charter a transporter by boat to get you there or if the tides are right you can also hike the shore line around.  It is a 6 mile loop system that takes you into the higher elevations and back around to where you started or you can take the trail to the top of the mountain.  Seward Alaska has a lot to offer from fishing, sight seeing, glacier tours, hiking and many other things.  When your on a trip to Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula I highly recommend taking time to make Seward one of your stops. Here are a few pictures of the scenic trip. 20121013-204219.jpg 20121013-204230.jpg This is where we made camp in the High country.  Picking a spot with a good water source is key if you plan on staying for anytime at all. 20121013-204248.jpg 20121013-204256.jpg 20121013-204302.jpg I don’t do enough hiking and every time I start a climb I mumble to myself why am I doing this but it is definitely worth is when you wake up to a view like this.

Sterling Alaska to Seward alaska

I took a few pictures this morning of the drive from Sterling Alaska to Seward Alaska. It’s about a 75 mile trip each way. I’m up early this morning again to go on a saltwater halibut and silver salmon fishing trip with some local clients. This is a rare opportunity for me with the fishing schedule I have on the Kenai River. 20120803-065920.jpg A view on the Sterling Highway at dawn looking towards Cooper Landing. 20120803-070011.jpg 20120803-070042.jpg This is on the Seward Highway just outside of Moose pass headed towards seward. 20120803-070111.jpg   20120803-070154.jpg Fireweed growing beside the seward highway. 20120803-074223.jpg Road construction at Ptarmigan creek just outside of moose pass slowed us up a little this morning.  I always leave at least a half hour early to allow for construction in Alaska.  You can bet with the short season to work on the roads that you will run into some construction at some point on your trip. 20120803-074243.jpg 20120803-074320.jpg   Enjoy and you will not be able to help from seeing beautiful sites like these along the route from sterling Alaska to Seward Alaska

Seward Alaska mountain marathon

Happy 4th of july from the Seward Alaska mountain marathon! A total of 3022 feet climb with an average of 40% grade in nearly 5 miles the Seward Alaska mountain marathon is the second oldest race in north America. Our good friend Kelly Murray from Virginia was drawn for the race after three years of applying. It’s rainy and foggy on the mountain today so the conditions are going to be bad. Olympic cross country skier Holly Brooks from anchorage Alaska won the women’s race this year in 51 minutes and 55 seconds!  The day was a lot of fun but I don’t think I’ll be running up a mountain anytime soon.  Maybe hiking up a mountain is more my style 20120704-121324.jpg 20120704-121639.jpg Seward has a lot off fun attractions to offer but this race is one of the community’s most loved events. Of you’re ever in Alaska on the 4th of July make sure you come to Seward for the race, parade and great food. You can even get chocolate covered bacon!! Yuck but you have to try it because it’s chocolate covered bacon. 20120704-150012.jpg Kelly crossing the finish line with a shot of the mountain she just went up and came down! 20120704-150317.jpg
