Another beautiful day fishing for sockeye salmon on the Kenai river, If the days continue to be this nice I’ll think I’m some where else other than Alaska. The weather has been great and so has the kenai river Salmon fishing! We had our fish in less than an hour yesterday and then moved on to rainbow trout fishing. After we are finished salmon fishing I will clean your fish for you on the river. By doing this on the river we offer food back into the system for other species and that way I know you get the most out of your harvest. The rainbow trout and dolly Varden fishing was a little slower but with some work we found a concentration of fish and managed to pull the day of successful.
With so many sockeye in the river I believe that it Freaks the rainbow trout out for a few days. Now there are enough carcasses in the river that the trout should start to really key in on them! In a few days though a fresh flesh fly will do very well just down stream of the sockeye salmon anglers. If there is time after a Kenai river salmon trip we are happy to make a few drifts for you to try and catch some rainbow trout if you would like.

Drifting on the Fly, LLC proudly added a Willie Predator power boat to the business. The boat is 20 feet long and is 72 inches wide and is powered by a 50 horse power Mercury motor and has a 9.9 horse power Mercury motor for secondary power. Though running a drift boat on the Kenai River for salmon, Dolly Varden and rainbow trout has its place, the power boat has its benefits as well.
The use of a powerboat for rainbow trout fishing on the middle Kenai River is a very effective way to have a chance at big Kenai River rainbow trout. This boat also allows us to easily fish the lower Kenai River for king salmon. With a 50-horse power engine on the back of the boat running multiple drifts through a hole can be done in no time.
The option to fish for rainbow trout, silver salmon, or sockeye salmon on the middle river in a power boat is now available. I have owned and run power boats for years and it is nice to finally add one to our guided fishing operation.
We are looking forward to another great fishing season. Booking a guide trip on the kenai river with Drifting on the Fly easy!
Kenai river king salmon fishing should be something you do on your visit to the kenai peninsula in July! Many fish are caught every year over 70 pounds and a 50 pound fish in not uncommon. The Kenai River is big and runs fast in the summer months. We have power boat so that we can rework the runs and if you prefer to fish out of a drift boat we can accomodate that as well. Kenai River King Salmon Fishing out of a drift boat is a lot of work but very doable. We landed this big kenai river king salmon out of my 18 foot Willie drift boat.
Today After a day of guiding trout and Sockeye Salmon fishing on the kenai river my buddy Ben Hancock and Dan Wikner arrived with perfect timing. We unloaded the guide boat and grabbed the private boat to set out for a short drift on the Kenai between River Quest and Pillars boat launch. Mid way through my friend hit his first king salmon ever and for sure one to remember!
Good job Ben!!!!
