WHEN TO COME DOLLY VARDEN FISHING

WHEN TO COME DOLLY VARDEN FISHING ON THE KENAI RIVER. Alaska Dolly Varden on a fly rod! What an experience – Guided Alaska Dolly Varden Fly Fishing on the Kenai River or one of the many surrounding streams. Drift Boat or wade fishing trips can both be quite productive for Dolly Varden. wayne leslie June starts the Dolly Varden season on many of the streams we regularly guide including the Kenai River. We typically start the season fishing standard streamer patterns such as muddlers, sculpins, leech patterns, and flesh flies. As the Salmon increase in numbers the Dolly’s tend to move into the Salmon spawning grounds. Here they fatten up on salmon flesh and eggs. Targeting Dolly’s involves locating these spawning areas and matching what the Dolly’s are feeding on; fresh eggs, old eggs, flesh… any of which will work from day to day; we call it Match-the-Hatch – Alaska Style. Dolly Fishing continues through the month of October and typically cold weather chases us off the river before they stop feeding. 2011 Guided River Trip Rate $250 per person *LARGE GROUPS WELCOME *LODGING PACKAGES AVAILABLE *EXCLUSIVE BOAT PACKAGES -2 PERSON EXCLUSIVE STARTING AT $750.00 A DAY -3 PERSON EXCLUSIVE STARTING AT $950.00 A DAY contact details, business phone: 907-382-6808 or send an inquiry here!

KENAI RIVER RAINBOW TROUT

When the river starts to rise with melt off and the Kenai river Rainbow trout season opens (june 11th) don’t hesitate to add a sink tip line into your arsenal. I prefer to fly fish a 250 grain sink tip line and a six weight rod for getting down to those big fish.  Leeches, clousers, woolly boogers, and muddler minnows should get you into fish.  Swing them down and across, keeping them as deep as you can.  Also, don’t overlook the slower water in early morning and late afternoon.  Fish slow and thorough! If you find that the fish are just not responding switch up to the old flesh fly and keep it in the thick cover.  Flesh gets caught up in overhangs, and washed back into the river with rising water throughout the spring.  This Rainbow trout was fooled by an articulated flesh fly pattern just after I took this picture Kenai rainbow set up and ready to feed There are some beautiful days in the spring and they are long days.  This allows us to get a lot of fishing in here in Alaskas short season.  If you would like to get in on a guided kenai river rainbow trout trip contact us today!     Tight Lines Scott Drifting On The Fly, LLC
