Kasilof river steelhead fishing trips

20130602-194013.jpg In May and early June, kasilof river steelhead fishing trips can be very productive. Before the glacier and run off bring the water levels up fish can be found throughout the whole system. This week my kasilof river steelhead fishing trips produced not only steelhead but also dolly Varden and king salmon.

20130602-195638.jpg We have had some beautiful weather this week. The spring fishery will be over soon. Steelhead fishing on the Kenai peninsula will continue in the fall about the middle of September through the month of October. If pursuing steelhead in Alaska on your vacation is something that you would like to do give us a call anytime and we can talk about timing and setting up a steelhead guide trip with our guide service.

Sterling Alaska

20120818-122730.jpg 20120818-122747.jpg Beers by the campfire last night in Sterling Alaska. Days are getting shorter but in the middle of August you know that it is still late when the sun goes down.  The dogs are loving it and what a great way to spend an evening.  Being laid back and enjoying good company is living life here in sterling Alaska.  In sterling Alaska there is camping, horseback riding, hiking, conoing, fishing, boating, and many other things to do on vacation.  Troy and lisa have some great trail horses and we are discussing which trail we should go riding on in a few weekends.  The upper end of the swanson river is also accessed through sterling alaska.  If you are planning to conoe the swanson river trail system give us a call.  We have done this trip many times and are willing to give any advice that we can.  Off to work in the early morning so I’d better be heading to bed! Rainbow trout and silver salmon season is here!!  The Kenai river is producing some good first run silver salmon this year and the trout fishing has been epic. Kenai river king salmon

Headed up the Kenai river this morning in hopes of catching a handful of rainbow trout.   20120707-102659.jpg We are swinging black leeches today out of the boat and picking a few fish up here and there. Client and good friend Dan Goff sets the hook on the swing and line starts peeling. The fish swirled and we both new he had a very big fish on. This is probably Dan’s 20th+ trout trip on the Kenai river with me and he knows all to well how fast you can get schooled on a big fish. After just a short 3 minutes we new he had a 30-35 pound kenai river king salmon on. We cranked down the drag a little and grabbed the leader. Got a quick photo of the fish and released him immediately. What a great battle and it just goes to prove that you never know why you will latch on to when fly fishing the Kenai river. 20120707-103410.jpg 20120707-103510.jpg The Catch and Release tool I use really comes in handy when you don’t want to put a fish in the net. 20120707-103618.jpg Line screaming off of Dan’s real from a Kenai River King Salmon.

Shenandoah Valley fly fishing

I had a chance to get home and fly fish in the Shenandoah national park and Shenandoah valley  for a couple of days.  Shenandoah valley fly fishing involves a lot of hiking, wade fishing and or drift boat fishing.  The weather was OK and the fishing was great.  I only had a couple of opportunities to get out with the boys from www.murraysflyshop.com but when I did it was on. va-2009-009There is nothing big about the trout in Shenandoah nation park but native fish that are thousands of years old and readily taking dry flies makes this fishing as fun as any I have ever done.  The beautiful mountain streams can put the most seasoned fishers into a trance. We fished the Rapidan river in Madison county VA on this trip but there are over 50 fish able streams in the park! va-2009-017 Guide John Colman with a nice small mouth on the North Fork of the Shenandoah river.  Though the water temperature was colder than we would have liked the fish still cooperated.  We caught Small mouth bass, Large mouth bass, sunfish and fall fish. If you are interested in taking a fun, fish filled trip in the Shenandoah valley I highly recommend that you check out www.murraysflyshop.com. We are back in AK and start our season here may 16th!  King Salmon fishing should be good and if you are looking for an Alaska vacation for 2009 make sure you check us out at www.driftingonthefly.com Tight lines, Scott sager
