Kenai river salmon

Another beautiful day fishing for sockeye salmon on the Kenai river, If the days continue to be this nice I’ll think I’m some where else other than Alaska. The weather has been great and so has the kenai river Salmon fishing! We had our fish in less than an hour yesterday and then moved on to rainbow trout fishing. After we are finished salmon fishing I will clean your fish for you on the river.  By doing this on the river we offer food back into the system for other species and that way I know you get the most out of your harvest.  The rainbow trout and dolly Varden fishing was a little slower but with some work we found a concentration of fish and managed to pull the day of successful. 20120719-083327.jpg With so many sockeye in the river I believe that it Freaks the rainbow trout out for a few days. Now there are enough carcasses in the river that the trout should start to really key in on them! In a few days though a fresh flesh fly will do very well just down stream of the sockeye salmon anglers.  If there is time after a Kenai river salmon trip we are happy to make a few drifts for you to try and catch some rainbow trout if you would like. Kenai river sockeye salmon fishing

Kenai river sockeye salmon fishing has been excellent! The Kenai River got a push of just under 120,000 sockeye salmon yesterday For a total of around 200,000 fish for the second run. These are great numbers of fish and getting a few shouldn’t be a problem for the next few weeks!!! This morning I had a great crew and they had there fish in just a few hours. Once you have your limit of  kenai river sockeye salmon you don’t have to quit fishing.  We can then pursue other species like rainbow trout and dolly varden. 20120717-095835.jpg A nice limit of fish like this will keep your freezer stocked up with fresh sockeye salmon for months, if you book multiple days of fishing you could have salmon to eat throughout the year. Drift boat anchor

If you ever loose an anchor and don’t have a spare, improvise by using a rock as a drift boat anchor. This guy said he just prefers a rock anchor over a lead anchor so he uses it all the time! 20120613-171008.jpg Guided Kasilof river king salmon fishing trips are a lot of fun.  You never know what you are going to see or experience. Silver Salmon Fly Fishing

copy-of-600.jpg

When I think of Salmon on the fly rod I think Silver Salmon fly fishing.  The fishing typically gets good by mid to late July on some of our fly out fishing and mid Aug. to the end of Oct. on the Kenai peninsula and the kenai river.  In the right conditions silver salmon will take the fly very aggressively.  I’ve even had many opportunities to take these fish on top water.  Bunny flies, articulated flies, marabou flies, leaches, spoon flies, etc. are just a few patterns that will work well for these fish.  I find a slow strip in slow water or swinging your flies in faster water draw the most strikes.  I prefer a strip set or scissor strike to set the hook.  This way if you miss the fish you don’t pull the streamer out of the strike zone and often the fish will come back to give you a second chance.  If you are fishing from a boat make sure you fish the fly all the way back to the boat.  I see fish chasing all the way to the boat for a last chance strike. If you are interested in matching your skills with these fish make sure you contact me at www.driftingonthefly.com and we’ll get you lined up on a alaska fishing guide tip.
