Evening fishing for sockeye salmon on the Kenai river has been very good. The Kenai river has gotten over a million sockeye salmon so far. I’ve noticed that most people and guides are starting early in the morning and finding a limit fairly quick. The fish have been pushing through all day most days and I find that I can get the gravel bar of my choice if I fish a little later. This is clearing up the banks for space to fish by mid afternoon and the sockeye salmon are still pushing by very good. I do notice that when the sun is higher up like today that the fish move a little further off the bank. This means more weight and more line to manage but with a little coaching these folks got the hang of it quick.
Having this whole high bank to ourselves is not common during the peak of the season, a great reason for evening fishing for sockeye salmon on the Kenai river.
I even had an opportunity to catch a fish for myself today. I don’t usually fish on trips but with just two people I found time to make a few drifts. The sun is out and It is a beautiful day to be sockeye salmon fishing on the kenai river!
