copy-of-pim3cture-024.jpg

Rainbow trout fishing the kenai river is something to remember.  Fish like these are caught daily and are a good representation of what you can expect on a guide trip though larger fish are caught often.  The best times to join us on a guided trip is June 11th- June 25th and then again from August 10th-October 20th.  The Alaska fishing season is short and we fish for many different species in this time.  I stay current with my tactics and with reports on the river.  We will keep you on the hottest spots and will always work hard to keep you into fish.

FLY FISHING THE KENAI RIVER

copy-of-12.jpg

Fly fishing the kenai river is a great way to spend time on your vacation. I recently was asked the question ‘What rod would you recommend for Rainbow trout fishing on the Kenai River’?  I thought about it and my answer: there is a rod for every situation.  On the Upper kenai River I like to use a 9′ – 10′ 6 or 7 weight and  then a 7-8 weight on the Middle Kenai river for rainbow trout and dolly varden.  I think it comes down to preference when choosing a rod.  One thing that I do consider is the amount of weight of the fly you are casting and the size of fish that you could latch on to.  No matter the weight of the rod I believe that a 10′ rod or longer even is your best length for big mends and long leaders!

Whenever you approach a stream or river make sure you look before you wade.  Fish will often be feeding close to the bank and this is a fish you can catch instead of spooking into deeper water.

I’d be happy to show you a guided trip down the kenai river.  We have wade fishing, drift boat, and power boat opportunities available.

Kenai River Rainbow Trout Fishing

copy-of-41.jpg

Kenai river rainbow trout fishing on the Upper river today.  This young man caught one of the largest upper kenai river rainbow trout that I have landed on my boat. Kids should have all the luck! Landing Big upper kenai river rainbow trout on light tackle or fly is a real treat. The current is swift and there are many obstacles that can end a battle with a big fish quickly. So many times a fish like this will out play the most experience fisher person. A long run a couple of jumps and some good luck and this fish fell to the net and got to pose for the camera.  The Kenai river offers good fishing from the start of the system all the way to the end of the system.  Depending on timing and what is happening on the river will determine which section of river we will pursue.  I often fish the upper kenai river in the fall. Guided kenai river rainbow trout fishing trips cost 275.00 per person for walk and wade, drift boat fishing or power boat fishing. Tight Lines, Scott Sager Drifting On The Fly, LLC

FALL STEEL HEAD FISHING

fall steel head fishing is in full swing right now. I don’t know if it is good or bad… The river level that is. On one hand I cannot get to my favorite “winter fishing” areas because I can’t wade across the river. On the other hand these levels make the river very easy to float the Kenai River. The Kenai River continues to flow at a July level. An ice dam breaking started the abundant flow of water and recent rain/ snow has kept the levels up. As I write this it is 23 degrees but yesterday the high was 45 degrees – balmy! The snow from last week has almost all melted in the flats though, the mountains are fully covered. The middle river (Kenai) is still fishing well with flesh and eggs. Steel head fishing has been hit or miss but my most productive runs have been producing fish every day.. The Steel head runs seem to be sporadic this year than like other years and the streams on the lower peninsula are dirty from the rainfall.  This is probably why the fishing seems to be sporadic? Give us a call to book a fishing trip on the kenai river or surrounding waters or to get a report on what I have been experiencing. Tight Lines, Scott Sager Drifting On The Fly, LLC

Willow Creek Fly Fishing

Willow Creek Alaska Guided Rainbow Trout Grayling and Dolly Varden Fly Fishing with Guide Scott Sager Willow creek fly fishing opportunities are action packed and exciting.  September Rainbow trout fishing is great almost everywhere in Alaska now. Most of the Salmon are at the end of their life cycle and the trout are really keying in on this food source right now.   I fished Willow Creek with the folks from Murray’s fly shop on Tuesday and we had a spectacular time.  The fishing on the many streams off the Parks highway are easily accessible and full of fish.  The rainbow Trout seemed to concentrate at the confluence of the Susitna and Willow Creek in good numbers today.  We caught three species of fish in about 30 minutes.  Grayling, Dolly Varden, and Rainbow trout were our main focus letting the salmon spawn with no harassment of big streamers in there spawning beds. Once a salmon sets up on its spawning bed or also known as a red they will protect this area by taking anything that passes through this area.  Willow creek fly fishing is a lot of fun, mostly wade fishing opportunities and  A great place to check out. Hope to see you on the river!

We can get you lined up on a Willow creek fly fishing trip upon request and will be happy to show you the river.  Just another Alaska fishing opportunity.

KENAI RIVER RAINBOW TROUT FISHING

Rainbow Trout on the Kenai River, Alaska with guide Scott Sager   The Kenai river rainbow trout fishing has shown great improvements on the egg bite in the last two weeks. The fish below Skilak on the middle kenai river seem to be keying in on the egg spawn from the king salmon. I’m finding that size 10 mil. egg pattern is working best for me. A dead drift is very important, the kenai river rainbow  trout see many anglers these days and get wise to a drift with the least bit of drag in it. keep your casts short and your rod high.  The less line on the water is the best to prevent any drag at all.  Also, do not count out the Sockeye Salmon, they have been stacking up and are ready to drop any minute in this area. Guided kenai river rainbow trout fishing is available now.  We take booking for drift boat trips, power boat trips, wade fishing trips, and fly out fishing trips.  We will work close with you to design a personal and unforgettable fishing trip in Alaska Thanks for checking us out and I’ll try to post again as soon as the fish key in on another bite.
