Kenai river king salmon

Headed up the Kenai river this morning in hopes of catching a handful of rainbow trout.   20120707-102659.jpg We are swinging black leeches today out of the boat and picking a few fish up here and there. Client and good friend Dan Goff sets the hook on the swing and line starts peeling. The fish swirled and we both new he had a very big fish on. This is probably Dan’s 20th+ trout trip on the Kenai river with me and he knows all to well how fast you can get schooled on a big fish. After just a short 3 minutes we new he had a 30-35 pound kenai river king salmon on. We cranked down the drag a little and grabbed the leader. Got a quick photo of the fish and released him immediately. What a great battle and it just goes to prove that you never know why you will latch on to when fly fishing the Kenai river. 20120707-103410.jpg 20120707-103510.jpg The Catch and Release tool I use really comes in handy when you don’t want to put a fish in the net. 20120707-103618.jpg Line screaming off of Dan’s real from a Kenai River King Salmon.

Kenai river fishing

kenai river fishing for rainbow trout  was slower today but we did manage to hook a few and land a few! I found that swinging leeches with a sinking tip line got the most bites. The Kenai river is big and the fish are spread out more now. I found fish in the eddies and in the normal spots but no big concentration were found. Big bunny leeches and smaller flesh fly patterns seemed to be the ticket on a dead drift.  Some days its a dead drift and some days it is on the swing.  I will put an indicator on with a trusted pattern and run a dead drift and swing it at the end of the drift.  If I see that most of my takes are on the swing I will take the indicator off and take more of a down and across approach.   20120705-214627.jpg 20120705-214634.jpg This unlucky sockeye salmon decided to take a leech on the swing.  After a long winter a fresh salmon on the BBQ is always looked forward too.  A 10 to 12 pound fish on a 7 weight fly rod put up a great battle.

Kenai river rainbow trout fishing

A float plane passing over while we were chasing kenai river rainbow trout yesterday.  Days on the Kenai river rainbow trout fishing seem to go by so fast but scenes like this one will last a lifetime in ones mind.  Kenai river Rainbow trout fishing was good In The morning and tapered off by the afternoon. Bright sunny days seem to do this to any species of fish everywhere.  Flesh flies and streamers seamed to be the best fly selections. Today dead drifting size 6 black wooly boogers seamed to be the ticket. 20120624-054404.jpg Kenai river rainbow trout fishing can be intimidating because of the size of the river.  When ever I approach a large body of water the first thing that comes to mind is to look at it like a smaller stream.  Breaking down the runs and paying attention to the depth of the river where you are getting bites in.  This might help in not getting overwhelmed by the sheer size of the system and when you find fish don’t leave fish. If you would like a guided trip for rainbow trout or salmon feel free to give us a call at 907-382-6808 anytime or contact us through the site!

Enjoying a day on the Kenai river rainbow trout fishing. A couple friends enjoying the sun while cruising back up to the top of the run in their drift boat.  In the really deep runs fishing a float rod will allow you to be on the bottom at any depth, This method of fishing is also helpful in getting your drift away from the boat in clear water. 20120622-120406.jpg20120622-120617.jpg There are many different ways to pursue kenai river rainbow trout and we try to accommodate all anglers with their preferred way to fish.  I like to make sure that every angler has the opportunity to put a fly rod in their hands if they are willing though.  Kenai river rainbow trout fishing is unique in the way that the perfect cast is not necessary but the perfect drift is and we pride ourselves on good communication and teaching you how to make a drift to catch a fish. Choose a day on the drift boat or power boat to go on the Kenai river rainbow trout fishing and you will have a great day on the water.   Let us know which you would prefer and the technique that best suites you and we will get you lined up. Drift boat anchor

If you ever loose an anchor and don’t have a spare, improvise by using a rock as a drift boat anchor. This guy said he just prefers a rock anchor over a lead anchor so he uses it all the time! 20120613-171008.jpg Guided Kasilof river king salmon fishing trips are a lot of fun.  You never know what you are going to see or experience. Steelhead

In early April we fished the Kenai River for a week straight and caught some beautiful steelhead and rainbow trout.  All of the fish we caught were on black leech’s and washed out flesh patterns.  By the middle of April we started to see a large number of fish staging up for the spawn. When we see this starting to happen we back off of the rainbow trout on the Kenai River and gear our efforts more towards steel head fishing and lakes that are starting to show open water.

The Kenai River closes to trout fishing starting May first to help protect our resident rainbow trout in their most vulnerable time. Then on June 11Th the river opens back up again to trout fishing.   Like any fish during the spawn, Rainbow trout exert a lot of energy and can be easily stressed by poor handling and long battles on hook and line.  In the past few years we have noticed a big jump winter/spring trout fishing so it is more important than ever to do our part in protecting our waters.       We are ready for the 2011, South Central Alaska fishing season to get started!  Steelhead fishing on the Kasilof River is well under way and King Salmon should show up in fish-able numbers by the middle of May. There are seats available but they are filling up fast.  Call today to reserve you seat for salmon or rainbow trout.       Tight Lines, Scott 907-382-6808 www.driftingonthefly.com

KENAI RIVER RAINBOW TROUT

When fishing if I have the opportunity to get above a hole and watch for a minute, I take full advantage.  Spotting Kenai river rainbow trout is difficult in the glacier tented water but it can be done.  Watching over a gravel bar can be the most productive.  Early in the spring rainbows on the kenai river will cruise in search of food, so look for flashes, anything that is moving, and dark objects that just don’t belong.  Polarized sun glasses really help in this situation. 09-april-steed-trip-010 We spent a few minutes watching this gravel bar, being above it gives you a real advantage in spotting fish. 09-april www.driftingonthefly.com This is a picture lower on the gravel bar, you can see how the higher you get the better the chance of spotting a fish. I have been watching fish move on and off of it for a few minutes now.  It’s time to get a line wet. Take the time on your next outing to just watch for a minute and you’ll be surprised on how many fish you start to see. FISHING THE KENAI RIVER ALASKA

Fishing the Kenai river Alaska is picking up more and more every day now! The Kasilof river is producing a few Steel head and it should be getting better with every change of the tide now. Alaska Steel HeadJody Steed with a good steel head caught this past week on a wade fishing trip on the Kasilof River. The Kenai River also produced a few rainbow trout for us on the following day.  The skies were clear, air temp was around 50 but we did have to battle the wind all day. Kenai river Rainbow This huge Rainbow trout was caught on an olive, Murray’s Helgramite, size 8.  This fly pattern can be found at www.murraysflyshop.com, it works great as a leech pattern in AK as well as for a helgramite/leech pattern for small mouth bass in Virginia.  When out this time of year make sure to keep your eyes open for ice floating down the kenai river! Be sure to contact us at www.driftingonthefly.com when you are looking for your next AK guided fishing trip on the kenai river. We are taking bookings for the upcoming season and will be happy to get you hooked up. Tight lines, Scott Sager 907-382-6808
